The Devon Rex originated in England, specifically in the Devon region, where the breed was first discovered in the late 1950s. The founding cat, Kirlee, was a curly-coated kitten found by Beryl Cox. This unique mutation sparked a breeding program to preserve the distinctive features of the Devon Rex.
Appearance
The Devon Rex is known for its distinctive pixie-like appearance, characterized by a short, broad wedge-shaped head and a flat skull. Their large, wide-set, oval eyes can be any color. Notably, the ears of the Devon Rex are large and set wide apart with rounded tips. Their coat is short, dense, and soft, with a wavy or rippled effect due to the curly fur.
Health Considerations
Devon Rex cats may face several health issues, including hereditary myopathy—a genetic condition leading to muscle weakness, potentially causing serious complications like laryngospasm. They are also prone to feline atopic dermatitis, leading to skin irritation, as well as congenital hypotrichosis and Malassezia dermatitis.
